An Open Letter to President Donald J. Trump
Dear Mr. Trump,
I know you're not listening. You never listen to anyone except to those whose input supports and encourages the disjointed thoughts that rattle around in your self-absorbed cranium. However, on the off chance that you have one brain cell capable of rational thought, I offer the following…
You have spent your entire life fighting the imaginary monsters you thought were under your bed as a child. Monsters that you believe still lurk there now. Monsters that keep you awake at night tweeting invectives and insults in an effort to prove that they are real and at the same time to make them go away. You have projected your irrational fear onto others and believe that making them fear you means you are winning the battle and are truly powerful. In truth, all it has accomplished is to keep you functioning as a frightened child battling a fiction in the face of what adults call reality.
The coronavirus outbreak is giving you the opportunity to battle and perhaps vanquish a real monster. But because it is an opportunity and not a fait ac·com·pli, you will have to take a leap of faith, reject decades of habit, and trust the knowledge and experience of others over what you feel in your gut. What is found in a person's gut is shit and not material suitable for crafting policies which impact the lives of millions of Americans.
Should you accept the challenge, you may at long last face the monsters under your bed and force them to pass into the realm of childhood beliefs where unicorns, Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and the easter Bunny dwell. You may finally discover that having people respect instead of fear you makes you feel better about yourself and enables you to sleep much more peacefully.
